Your first international flight: a simple checklist

By FlightBookingCenter Travel Team. Published September 15, 2026.

Passports, visas, arrival times and what to pack in your carry-on: the essentials, in order.

Weeks before you fly

  • Check your passport's expiry date. Many countries want it valid for several months beyond your stay.
  • Check whether you need a visa or electronic travel authorization, including for countries where you connect.
  • Make sure the name on your ticket exactly matches your passport.
  • Tell your bank you'll be traveling.

The day before

  • Check in online if your airline allows it.
  • Confirm your flight times and terminal.
  • Pack chargers, adapters and any medicines in your carry-on.

At the airport

For international flights, many travelers aim to arrive about three hours before departure. Airlines close check-in and boarding earlier for international flights than domestic ones.
